How to Process Your Trademark Renewal

A trademark is a symbol, word, or group of words used by a business or company to distinguish their products and services from those of others. Your trademark shows your identity as a business, so it is important to have it registered. For one, you’ll have exclusive use of the mark and you alone will benefit from its increasing market value. When you have it registered, other businesses will not be able to use your mark for their own benefit.

In Singapore however, a trademark is registered for a period of only 10 years. But don’t worry! You will be able to renew your trademark registration easily with our help.

Engaging with Brandmark Specialist for Your Trademark Renewal

Just like in having a trademark registered, having one renewed also proves to be quite the task. But our trademark specialists will be ready to assist you throughout the process.

An application for the renewal of a trademark should be made no earlier than 6 months before and no later than 6 months after the date the registration certificate expires. So, around that time period, we can help you have your trademark renewed. The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) also makes rules wherein you, as the owner, are informed of the expiry of the registration and how it will be renewed.

A request for renewal also, should not ideally be made later than 6 months after the date the registration expires. This is because there is a prescribed renewal fee and if you pay within 6 months after the date of expiry, you will have to pay the late renewal fee as well. Also, between 6 months to a month before the expiry of the registration, we will send you a notice writing about the date of the expiration to keep you posted.

A trademark will be removed from the register only if you fail you fail to comply with the directions of the IPOS regarding trademark renewal or if you withdraw and abandon the application. But in the case that you want to restore a removed trademark, we can also help you. Within 6 months from the date the trademark is removed, you will be allowed to submit an application for restoration.

Handling of Renewal Objections and Appeal Liaising

When renewing a trademark, there are times when your application will be subject to an objection from others. You might have similarities with another company’s symbol and the like. In that case, we will be the ones to handle the objection and try for appeal liaising with the IPOS. That said, in most cases there are no objections for renewing of an existing mark.
